Medicine in Syria as a verdict for survivors

The country faces a critical shortage of vital medicines and treatments

The year 2024 marked a new chapter for Syria, which has experienced decades of devastating conflict – a change of power. This transition, seemingly aimed at giving the country a fresh start, has starkly revealed the severity of the humanitarian crisis that continues to plague Syrian society.

Against the backdrop of destroyed infrastructure and economic instability, a colossal shortage of aid is acutely felt. The already fragile healthcare system of the country stands on the brink of complete collapse.

Healthcare system on the edge of the abyss

It is precisely the medical sector, bearing the heaviest burden, that has become the primary indicator of survival today. Its condition serves as a litmus test for the reality of hope for the future for millions of Syrians.

At first glance, it might seem that after so many years of war, attention should be focused on security, housing reconstruction, and the economy. However, delving deeper reveals that it is the lack of accessible and quality medical care that is one of the most destructive factors hindering the normalization of life.

This is not merely a shortage of medicines or doctors. It is an existential threat that questions the very right to life, especially for the most vulnerable – children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. Ignoring this problem means condemning an entire generation to suffering and a lack of prospects.

Defeated diseases, resurrected in Syria

2025 became a year of returning forgotten threats for Syria. According to the WHO, acute diarrhea, flu-like illnesses, leishmaniasis, pediculosis, scabies, and even typhoid fever have ceased to be «rare occurrences», instantly becoming part of daily life.

And, unfortunately, the situation is not improving. In 2026, the country’s disease surveillance system continues to detect new outbreaks of hepatitis, measles, meningitis, mumps, chickenpox, and rubella. These are diseases that have long been eradicated in the civilized world thanks to mass vaccination and effective healthcare systems, but in Syria, they are once again posing a significant threat.

The plight of children is particularly alarming. Weakened by malnutrition, stress, and lacking basic protection, children’s bodies become ideal targets for these ailments. The absence of access to vaccination, medicines, and basic sanitation creates perfect conditions for the rapid spread of infections, turning childhood into a constant struggle for survival.

Ghost hospitals

In addition to the ruins of houses and debris of buildings, hospitals are also in a deplorable state. Institutions meant to be bastions of life and healing now resemble specters of the past. Most of them are either completely destroyed or reduced to lifeless husks. And those few buildings that miraculously survived or were partially restored do not function properly.

The reason is quite simple. Outdated or damaged equipment, which hasn’t been updated for decades, simply cannot cope with modern challenges. Furthermore, Syria faces a critical shortage of new treatment methods.

However, the most acute deficit is the shortage of qualified medical specialists. Doctors and nurses, many of whom have either perished or left the country, are simply unable to provide the necessary assistance. But even those who remain work in conditions that are difficult to call humane: a lack of basic resources, unbearable working conditions, and constant moral exhaustion.

Antibiotics as a new form of luxury

Financial difficulties, exacerbated daily by the fragmentation of the healthcare system, make the situation even more hopeless.

Even where restoration efforts are underway, fragmented, often externally dependent, and regrettably, not always coordinated efforts are in play. What might appear as a comprehensive plan on paper often boils down to partially addressing the most acute gaps. For ordinary Syrians, whose lives are already hanging by a thread, such «partial» assistance means only one thing: the price of life becomes exorbitant.

And here we arrive at the most painful point. The cost of a standard course of antibiotics, which in any other country is an accessible medicine, can equal a month’s salary in Syria, if such a salary even exists. For the majority of the population plunged into poverty, these sums are an unaffordable luxury. As a result, even the most common illnesses, easily treatable, become a death sentence.

Home terrifying to return to

The lack of accessible medical care has become one of the key factors deterring Syrian refugees from returning to their homeland. Alongside the widespread destruction of housing and infrastructure, the scarcity of jobs, and the persistent security instability, it is precisely the inability to receive quality medical care that forms a significant barrier on the path home. People are simply unwilling to risk their lives and the lives of their children, knowing that at home, only hopelessness and slow decline might await them.

It is evident that without a comprehensive solution to the healthcare problem, without restoring medical infrastructure and ensuring access to vital resources, any hope for the full recovery of Syria will remain an unfulfilled dream.

Moreover, there is a high probability that threats to public health will not only persist but will continue to exacerbate the destroyed healthcare system, making it vulnerable to any new shocks. Today, Syria needs not one-off actions, but long-term, systemic support. Otherwise, the ghost hospitals will remain a symbol of a country where the price of life is an empty vial.
